Student Projects

Here are photographs of some of the projects Yoka Reeder's students have done. As a result of a lesson on home mortgages and cumulative interest, the students despaired of ever owning their own house. Yoka then suggested they find a way to own a home some other way. Her students researched plots of land that were inexpensive because they were difficult to build on - too steeply sloped - figured out what it would cost to build a spacious home on it, and built a home they called "Earthship." When that project was completed, they realized they could own their own home and felt much better.

This is the Earthship. It's made of straw bales, soda pop cans, chicken wire, and adobe.

Yoka's students painted this tepee. Yoka purchased the canvas, had the poles trucked in, and the kids set it up. They sometimes slept and cooked in it. It was lots of fun!

A lesson in math brought about the idea of building a log cabin. Yoka's students figured out what it would cost to build one. They worked out how to build it and what materials they would need. The students contacted several suppliers, requested quotes and decided where to purchase the materials. They prepared the plans, figured out the angles, the height and width of the structure, then they rolled up their sleeves and built it!
